Betty’s innovative art work captures the essence of the complex game, striking at the heart of a novice like me and of expert players and art collectors from around the globe. Miss Boll in her art life, and Betty to her friends, she re-imagines old ideas of leading literary and chess figures in ways as innovative as the Hypermoderns of the 1920s, making a new start for art by capturing the inner workings of the game and sharing them on canvas and multi-media surfaces. A Clever Chica in style and spirit, she greeted my novice curiosity with respect and patience, and by the time I left her exhibit, I felt comfortable talking about the game on terms that made sense to me. Together, we were able to piece together a meaningful conversation in English and my pigeon French, and our time together made me forever devoted to her vision and her kind, gentle method. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer is a must-visit spot for pilgrims and tourists to the region, and among the most popular destinations is the fabled Sanctuary of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. As was the tradition, the sleepy little town developed around the church, and the center remains vibrant today, with shops and snacks and gathering places filled with voices speaking many languages. Just steps from the church, I found myself wanting a memento, and there she was—Sarah. Humble and clean from the outside, her storefront, Les Bijoux de Sarah, is alive with meaningful symbols and jewelry for every budget and every belief system. Knowing that I did not have enough French to conduct a complicated negotiation for jewelry, I was a bit sheepish as I walked in. But Sarah, patient and ready to use hands and pictures and smiles to communicate with me, made me feel at home and at ease. Together, we carefully examined case after case of her unique and well-made treasures. And, together, we managed to locate treasures for my beloveds and myself, one of which I wear on my wrist each day to remind me of this Clever Chica pilgrimage. Sarah is proud of her home. She welcomes the mystic that is Camargue, and her tolerant patience is an example by which we can all learn and grow. For residents and migrants to this city-by-the-sea, mystic symbols of the gypsy heart, the flamingo, and the accessories of the Gardians and their ladies are in high demand. This featured Clever Chica, a native of Italy with a traveler’s heart, brings her unique perspective to representing all of the major symbols of Camargue life. From her original designs on pillows to her delicate, hand-made bags and sachets, this Clever Chica creates her art and mans her own store in the city’s busy tourist area. Honestly, it was the craftsmanship and the really, really low price of a straw bag outside the door that drew me in. But once she smiled at me, I was drawn to her gypsy heart and the warmth that her creative perspective spills lovingly on to all in her gaze. Her designs are, at once, modern and functional yet somehow connected to the form, in a Greek sense, of what they represent. But it was her tiny, little brown aumonière that won my heart forever. I spotted it across the store—lodged on a distant shelf in the back. The shells of the pilgrim adorned the brown crocheted bag, and the dainty leather straps were at once functional and trustworthy. I’d seen the ladies dressed in their traditional clothes wearing these bags the night before at the annual La Feria du Cheval. When I questioned our Chica about the bag, her eyes literally lit up. She told me that she’s finished it just the night before and that she makes them every year for the festival. She talked about how special it was to her and how she hoped it would find a great home. She told me about how the bags are traditional. Ladies wear them to be discrete and feminine—to hold their important personal items while allowing their hands to remain free. As she talked, she got more and more animated, and I became more and more certain that this bag was coming with me. It did, and when I got home, months later, and unpacked it, I found a special, secret gift inside—a hand-made sachet with hand-picked lavender. Wow. Amazing. I’m still blown away every time I think about this tender spirit and how she sent a present inside the gift of her artisanal accomplishment. The Savoy’s legendary tea service is all that you’d expect and more. Food allergies and special dietary needs are not an issue; the entire staff greets you and welcomes you and makes sure that your sandwiches and pastries and, of course, your chosen tea, are plentiful and divine. So to stand out in such perfection—such opulence—takes a special spirit—the kind of spirit that radiates from Kinga, our featured Clever Chica. Bright, curious, and professional, Kinga answered all of our many questions about legends and gossip on the Savoy experience. Her service was flawless—unnoticed in it’s perfection. And that’s just what I was doing in September of 2018 when I happened across Dössel & Rademacher, a pen and paper shop serving locals and visitors since 1913. As a writer, I’m pretty devoted to finding cool pens and paper, and the shop’s window displays were very tempting. In the summer of 2018, the Trans-Atlantic voyage from South Hampton, England, to New York, New York had nine sea days, which, for me, meant nine chances to spend most of the day in the steam room and spa! And while those nine days at sea, in addition to the other five port days, are amazing for passengers who enjoy the Lotus Spa, can you imagine being in charge of keeping that same spa clean and pristine with a smile on your face? Well, these two ladies do just that—day in and day out. But they do this job better than I’ve seen on any other ship in my nearly 30 cruises. These ladies are kind and patient. They make eye contact with everyone, and they remember your name and what you like and what you care about. After meeting them on the first day, I found myself looking forward to seeing them each day after. We shared ideas on the ports, on the day at sea, on learning languages, and, most importantly, on our dreams for the days to come. Working mother Lori hails from the Philippines, while Alma’s home base is Mexico. Both women are leaders in their families at home and aboard Princess. They lead by example. Every day is a blessing to these women; thus, each day becomes a blessing for those who see their smiling eyes and earn a tender, warm laugh from one or both of them. Professional, glorious, and sincere, their beauty is what the Clever Chicas project is all about: women doing extraordinary things every day. At Artes and Souvenirs in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto neighborhood, this Madonna Maker and I recognized in each other that impulse to find something more. For me, the search means travelling—finding Clever Chicas and connecting them to a larger audience. For this Lisbon business woman, wife, and mother of grown children, she searches for growth by decorating Madonnas to tell individual stories. When I wandered into her store one hot July afternoon in 2018, her smile struck me. I have no Portuguese at all, but, as is the Portuguese way, she was not bothered by my limitations. Together, we communicated using bits of English and Spanish and French and hand gestures. She and her delightful husband, proprietors of this fantastic and fairly priced gift shop, helped me find treasures for my beloveds. Among my favorite buys—ceramic statues of the black and white swallows with yellow beaks that represent the Portuguese family values of love and loyalty—of valuing the journey and the promise of always coming home. This Clever Chica reflects the best of Portugal’s culture. She is grounded in the tolerance required to sincerely and openly welcome travelers. She is the voice of a culture of travelers who for centuries have brought bring back the best that the world has to offer—then added that Portuguese twist to further perfect their global findings. While in her store, we talked about life and how we had ended up together on this day, and she shared that she’s waited all of her life to follow her own dream—to be an artist who creates representations of the Mother Mary that reflect different moments and experiences in a woman’s life. While the name might seem like just another tourist spot, the family who operates this store is devoted to the honoring the painful but proud past of the brave men who served and fell here. In fact, the store’s name is derived from the nickname given to the British World War I soldier—the average man who came to save Belgique brothers and sisters in need. Proud of her heritage and happy to welcome all who come to celebrate her history, Clever Chica Grietje stays well informed on the history of the region and on all events and activities scheduled in the area. On her advice alone, we stayed busy for the duration of our visit. Each idea she gave us was spot on and led us to important discoveries that we otherwise would have missed if we had relied just on internet ideas and recs. But perhaps the most charming component of Grietje’s style and charm is her gratitude. She made it a point to thank me and my husband for coming to remember those who are honored in Ypres. We first met her at the downtown tourist information center, where she guided us to the best value with the Copenhagen Card. These historic and cultural landmarks are nestled amid streets now crowded with hip, lighted galleries that keep the art accessible 24 hours a day. This tolerant and vibrant town also offers a rich and engaging music and bar scene, as one might expect of a former Viking stronghold. On my visit, one such watering hole, Gamla Beat Bar and Bakhage, hosted one of their noted multi-band rock fests. Oslo’s National Theatre, long famous for debuts by playwrights including Henrik Ibsen, was closed for the day. So I decided to give the local music scene a try. To my surprise, this event was not advertised by some rough and tumble Viking tribe or any masculine marketing. Instead, five women dressed in outlandish outfits that said ‘power’ and ‘confidence’ were on the bill printed out by the friendly attendant at the front desk at Oslo’s National Theatre. When I asked him what he thought about the concert, he looked at me, smiled and said, “I think you can handle it. You should go.” I did, and I still can’t thank him enough. The Cocktail Slippers, Oslo natives, were third on the card, and as they prepped to take the stage, they noticed me waving. They smiled warmly and invited me over. When I told them that I thought they’d be good role models for this project, they stopped what they were doing and smiled for this picture, noting they were happy to help. So, here they are. Founded in 2001 and standing strong, loud, and proud over their lyrics and beats about love gone wrong, these women are who they are. They apologize for nothing, and they show audiences that a heart femme is not to be trifled with. They embody the tradition of Blondie and The Gogos in helping Chicas cope with heartache. The voice of a generation, The Cocktail Slippers show the world that Oslo’s more than oil rigs and masculine marauders. Teaching in the virtual world allows me to reach these folks on their terms—deployed or stateside. And while the statement is now a part of our American fabric to the point of almost being trite at times, we must all remember that freedom is not free. Our brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces sacrifice in ways that most people cannot even imagine, and so do the families and loved ones who support them. Therefore, these students often have needs that only other military members or veterans can understand and combat. And that’s where this Clever Chica comes into view. An Air Force Reservist since 2015, Clever Chica Rose Smith was trained as a biomedical equipment technician, which is also her full-time civilian career with the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis. Already working full time and serving in the US Air Force Reserves, this dynamic spirit is also attending Colorado State University — Global Campus. She is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration and Management. As you might, by now, expect, she’s a leader in her classes, just as she is on the job and in her Reservist duties. In addition to her own academic work, she is a University leader as well. Since 2018, Rose, a VET Initiative winner, serves as a board member for CSU-Global’s chapter of the Student Veteran’s Association of America. That means that she finds time every week to meet with that team and troubleshoot any and all issues facing military students who are serving around the world while learning through the global campus. Every week, Rose attends the virtual meetings with a smile on her face and a willingness to do whatever research or legwork is required for the ideas of the larger team. She inspires everyone with her can-do attitude, and she never, ever misses a deadline. When I told her about the project, she said, as do so many Clever Chicas, “What can I do to help?” I told her that just sharing her smile and a sketch of who she is and what she is out there doing would make a difference to our readers. In a nutshell, dual enrollment allows high school students the chance to take some of the early undergraduate college classes, like literature and writing, while still in high school. The idea has many benefits. Of course, it helps students to take the classes for free instead of paying for them in college. But for first generation college students, the benefits are far greater than the money saved. For students who don’t come from homes with college graduates, the world of a college education can seem dark and mysterious. What will be expected of me when I take a writing class? How good do I need to be? And how will I learn to meet those standards? To help answer those questions, dual enrollment teachers in the state of Colorado are trained to teach the curriculum for writing and literature, among other general education subjects, at the college level. But how do the dual enrollment teachers earn the credentials to offer these special classes and skills? Well, thanks to innovative programs like the Graduate English Certificate Program at Colorado State University’s Global Campus, teachers who have the stamina, and, frankly, the iron will, can complete additional courses to earn those credentials in a totally online environment. Jenn and Jeni both flourished in that test of fire, standing out in their programs and, now, as graduates, serving as the leadership for CSU-Global’s English Studies Organization, a group that initiates new teachers in to the realities of teaching those general education courses and fosters discussions on current topics in higher education. Professionally, Jenn teaches high school students, and Jeni teaches community college students. They are, literally, teaching generations of students in the Denver area that they can, and, more importantly, should take these courses, earn the credits and skills of general education, and use those building blocks to earn degrees in whatever majors they choose. Both women hold monthly meetings with their CSU-Global peers. Both women present at regional and national academic conferences on critical issues in English Studies, and both women are working to establish new academic organizations to further their important work, including Rocky Mountain College English Association. And both of these women do all of these magical and exciting projects while keeping their families growing and going and remaining active members of their local communities. When she saw my panicked look and asked what I needed, I explained that I had to find the perfect treat for some of my most beloved. Together, we ciphered that the Original Ooey Gooey Butter Cakes would be a hit (and, I would later learn we were soooo right!). As I started to pick up the last few in the basket, she stopped me. Wait! We’ve got some fresh ones. Let me clear up this line, and I’ll go get them for you—a pretty good paraphrase of her charming choice of words. So, I waited. And while waiting, I noted a copy of Oedipus Rex on the counter. When questioned, Patrice, a working mom, revealed that she’s also a student at Meridian Community College. Wow. We talked a bit about Oedipus, as I wanted to repay her kindness with one of my skills—a bit of literary knowledge. I also told her about this project, and she stopped what she was doing, told me she believed in me, and smiled from her heart and soul for this picture. Not eager to face a tacky tourist shop already filled with a barrage of cruise ship souvenir seekers, I was about to just go for shade and call it a day when suddenly, I recognized a logo I’d seen all over the bridges and byways of waterfront towns on the German coastlines—the one you see in the photo—hanging as a placard outside a nearby shoppe. I walked in, family in tow, and started seeing my favorite surfer brands hanging tastefully in a nicely appointed surf shop, a shop that reminded me of Lahaina in Hawaii, in fact—top shelf stuff and a real surfer vibe. Before I could even orient myself to the lighting, our Clever Chica, Savannah, appeared, a blonde Ariel with a smile on her face and a bargain to be shared. “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but I heard you say you were looking for a hat. We have these, in your brand, on sale, if that helps.” She was not pushy; she was pleasant and genuine. As she started to hand me the hat that was, in fact, the brand I had mentioned just seconds before, I stopped her. “I know I said I wanted that brand, but what’s the one with that cool sailor’s logo?” I questioned. “Is it a German brand?” Still smiling, she noted that not only was it not German, the artist who designed the logo was right in the back; this was his store, and she’d never heard of the logo being shared in Europe. Both of us were surprised and somehow connected by this logo, ‘cause I love a logo, so we started talking like friends about fashion and goals and all things Chica. I picked up two hats—excellent quality, by the way, and the best buy I’ve made in a long time on the road—way below what you’d expect for the quality. As I wandered through the store, I noticed the original Classic designs mixed amid and among famous brands, and the Classic designs often stood out in the group. Offering everything from wooden sunglasses made with the precision of a finely-crafted skateboard to rash guards that are breathable and affordable (when do you see those two things happen at the same time?!), the Classic brand caught my attention. While I shopped, Savannah went to the back and brought the designer and owner to the front of the store to meet my family and hear the story about how we’d come to see his symbols being coveted in cities across Germany and France. And as Savannah went back and forth between me, the conversation, and helping my family find their sizes, she was also gingerly tending to the consistent flow of customers who came and went from the shop for the better part of an hour. She never missed a beat. She never stopped smiling, and she was warm and informed and interested in each person’s wants and experiences. Wow! When I told her about this project, she, like every other Chica to date, was eager to help—eager to become a woman helping. Let us note that her boss, the owner and designer, was also willing to help support the project. We thank both of them, and we praise them for the good work and honest brand they bring to their island. Well done! Doing many things is just part of who Savannah is, this bright, young college student who has lived on the island since she was five. When she’s not attending classes at the University of the Virgin Islands studying English and History (go, Chica, go!), she’s working at Classic or captaining boats up to 50 feet or — oh my goodness — piloting a plane! What an amazing renaissance woman— a Clever Chica who also agreed to be our first video interview. Now, that’s a brave lass, even by Ariel’s standards!
